Characters, not a font

When you copy gothic text from a generator and paste it into a bio, you are not carrying a font with you. Each letter is a different character that happens to look like a blackletter capital or small letter. Because they are real characters, they travel almost anywhere text can go, and that is why this trick works on sites that give you no font choice.

The Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block

Unicode has a block called Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols, which runs from U+1D400 to U+1D7FF. It began in Unicode 3.1 in 2001 so that mathematicians could give different meanings to the same letter by writing it in different styles. Fraktur and bold Fraktur live in this block. Fraktur capitals start at U+1D504, and bold Fraktur starts at U+1D56C.

Unicode did not create these characters to style ordinary writing. It recommends ordinary Latin letters and a proper font for regular text. Gothic generators use the characters for decoration anyway, and it works in many places, but treat it as a trick rather than a standard.

Why five capitals come from somewhere else

Five Fraktur capitals are missing from the math block: C, H, I, R and Z. Unicode already had them in the older Letterlike Symbols block (U+2100 to U+214F), so the new block left those spots empty. The characters ℭ, ℌ, ℑ, ℜ and ℨ are the five. They are real Fraktur letters too, but they come from another block, so a font that covers one block may not cover the other.

Where it works and where it does not

Social media bios, display names, captions and chat apps often show the characters well. Support depends on the fonts a device has, so on some systems the letters may show up as empty boxes or question marks. Games, usernames and forms often limit you to plain letters, and a site may reject the characters or turn them into boxes.

Search is a bigger problem. A gothic 𝔄 is a different character from A, so a page title or a username written this way may be hard to find. Some tools may treat them as plain letters, but you cannot count on it.

  • Test the result on the device where it will be seen.
  • Do not use it for passwords, usernames you need others to search for, or legal names.
  • The Fraktur ranges cover letters only. Unicode has no Fraktur digits, so numbers stay in a plain style.

Accessibility

Screen readers may handle these characters unevenly. Some may read each letter as a long name such as mathematical fraktur capital A, and others may skip them, so a whole sentence in gothic characters can be hard to follow for someone who listens to text. Keep gothic characters to a short name or a single decorative word, and put any important information in plain text beside it.

When you need a printed or image result, use the large preview instead. It draws real blackletter with a font, and you can download it as a PNG.
