Two things with one name

Search for an Old English font and you will get tall, dark, pointed letters like those on a newspaper title. Search for the Old English language and you will find Beowulf and a form of English that modern readers cannot follow without study. They are not connected in the way the name suggests.

What the font is

The lettering is blackletter, also called gothic script. It developed in medieval Europe and was later adapted into type, and Fraktur and Textura are two of its best-known forms. The label Old English describes the old-fashioned look rather than the language, and blackletter came centuries after the language it is named for.

A modern font sold as Old English is also a modern design. It often includes anachronistic characters, such as Arabic numerals, and lacks the historical letter alternatives that real manuscripts used.

What the language is

Old English, also called Anglo-Saxon, is the earliest attested form of English. It is generally dated from the fifth century to the twelfth, and one commonly cited range is 450 to 1150, though any such date is somewhat arbitrary. It is a West Germanic language, and a reader of modern English finds it largely incomprehensible without study.

It was first written in runes. From about the seventh or eighth century the Latin alphabet took over, with extra letters such as æ (ash), ð (eth), þ (thorn) and ƿ (wynn), the last two borrowed from the runic alphabet. Those manuscripts were written in Insular script, not in the tall blackletter that appeared much later.

  • The font name refers to a look, not a time period.
  • A gothic font cannot translate or spell Old English.
  • Typing a modern sentence in gothic letters leaves it as modern English.

What this means for your project

If you want the dark, medieval look for a logo, a card or a sign, blackletter is the right choice, and the generators on this site are built for that. Typing a modern English sentence in them changes only how the letters look. It does not turn the words into Old English.

If you are curious about the language itself, our sister site, Old English Translator, is about the Old English language, its letters and its sound. It is a better place to look for words, spelling and runes.

Put the idea to use with our Gothic text generator.
